The Plaza Apartments is located at the corner of Sixth
and Howard streets in San Francisco, California.
Plaza Apartments is a 9-story (and basement) mixed-use low-income housing
building. It has 106 single room occupancy (SRO) efficiency studios with
private baths. The housing part of the building contains community rooms,
social services, laundry facilities and a rooftop patio garden for the
previously chronically homeless tenants. The ground floor and basement
levels include a credit union and a community theatre.
The city-owned building was developed by the Public Initiatives Development
Corporation (PIDC), a subsidiary of the San
Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA).
Most of the $22 million in building financing was provided by SFRA and
Enterprise
Community Investment Inc.
The building was designed as a LEED
for New Construction (LEED-NC) green building project and is seeking
a LEED-NC rating of Silver. The Plaza Apartments also reflects the design
principles of the Green
Communities Initiative.
The building architectural design was a collaboration between Leddy
Maytum Stacy Architects and Paulett
Taggart Architects.
The building has many green features that make it healthier for tenants,
more economical to operate and environmentally-sound in its use of materials.
Now go and explore our virtual
tour of the Plaza Apartments. Find out why this is a great green building
and a wonderful home for the 106 previously homeless individuals who live
there now.
